Yucca Mountain

At the seminar tonight the speaker discussed the Yucca Mountain repository. The speaker quickly briefed the audience on what she would be presenting on and about how long it would take her to finish. As she stepped back to the computer i took a few seconds to see what the audience was made up of. The audience appeared to be evenly split amoung younger students and faculty and adults. None of the faculty or adults that were their seemed like they didnt get out very much. Eventually the speaker started her presentation. She discussed how nuclear energy was harnessed and how much we use in comparison to other countries around the world. She also discussed the specifications of the urananium used in power rods in the plants. Then she discussed how the nuclear plants are currently storing the used energy rods. The closer she got to her main point of discussion the less the audience raised their hands to ask questions. Lots of members of the audience ad notepads and pens and were vigerously taking notes. One man in front and to the right of me shook his head in agreeance with everything. One woman on the other hand seemed to be puzzled about everything that came out of the speakers mouth. I could tell by the way the woman was swaying her hand back and forth when she had a question and her large bag of papers that she came prepaired to argue. As the speaker informed us yucca mountain was chosen from 3 areas and found the most plausable of the three to build a vast nuclear containment area. It is in nevada about 80 miles from the south east border. Yucca mountain is a dry area and made up of very dense soil. Two very important factors for this facility. The facility is meant or storing used energy that the plants are not allowed to recycle by law. The facilities predicted maximum capacity is 70 metric tons of waste. Funny thing is that is how much exists in the world waiting to be stored right now. Predicted activation time for the facility is 2017 but it could be later that that even. There are still a number of problems that have to be dealt with. The transportation problems are going to be very difficult to solve. There is one way that is obviously the best way to transport the waste and that is by rail. But the nevada government wont allow the facility to build it. The Neveada government won't lend a helping hand to the project in any way. The Nevada government is putting up as many hoops as possible for the project. But the federal government is helping projecting leaders to jump right through them. The process in painstakingly redundent and eventually it will be completed and the progress underway. i could go all day but its 227 in the morning and im tiiirreeeeddd so good night.... p.s. Thanks for the post--it was very informative. Nuclear power and waste storage is always a controversial topic. People generally adopt a "not in my back yard" approach. The waste has to be stored somewhere, but states don't want it, Native American tribes don't want it, nobody wants it. It is a compelling topic, and you might consider using it for your research project.
